I have come here only to die...
A 75-year-old Egyptian doctor has left his comfortable life behind and come to Gaza to save the lives of the war-wounded.
When most people were fleeing the war zone to save their lives, renowned Egyptian orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ahmed Abdel Aziz chose the exact opposite path. Leaving behind his family, his own clinic, and a normal life, he traveled to besieged Gaza—where a skilled surgeon was needed most.
The hospital lacks adequate medicine and necessary surgical equipment. There is incessant bombing all around, and the risk of death at every moment. Yet, he did not back down. Instead, in that adverse environment, he continued to perform one complex surgery after another on the injured.
Despite the risk to his life, he refused to leave Gaza. His belief—a doctor's first duty is to save human lives.
After about 195 days, he was able to reach northern Gaza. The goal of his journey was not fame or recognition; it was only to fulfill his humanitarian duty and stand by the people injured in the horrors of war.
